Is Italy good for a City Break?

Image
Ben in Rome The last stop on this whirlwind tour of Europe is what you’ve all been waiting for. The home of Pizza and Aperol, Italia (Italy for the single-lingual of you). This was the biggest trip of the 5 where we spent 14 days travelling from north to south with nothing but the shoes on our back, the clothes on our feet, and a whole lot of google translate. City Break - Milan We started off in Milan, excited to try the cacio e pepe. We managed to get ourselves some tickets to the San Siro where we were blessed with some Giroud acrobatics and a sing song with the ultras. I think I enjoyed it more than the others! We also took a day excursion to Lake Como, did you know Star Wars was filmed there... Anyway, we managed to get our books out, enjoy an Aperol, and have a dip in the lake. City Break - Florence Next stop Florence, super pretty, lots of little streets to explore and many a statue to pose by. Not completely to scale I swear! A bit more expensive than the ...

Athens Excursions - Good for a city break?

Image
Its all Greek to me A 7 night excursion in one of the most ancient capitals in the world, a place named after a goddess, a place with lots of old buildings and older ruins. I think for this blog I’m going to start off with the food. Gyros! That’s all that needs to be said. 15 euros in cash and you’ve just got lunch for you and 4 friends for the next fortnight. Chicken, halloumi, why not both? Cheap and unbelievable. Anyway, the city is crazy big with culture and history unavoidable, even if you closed your eyes you’d probably walk into a big ol pillar of some temple. Of course, we wanted to hit all the hotspots and see some of the main attractions there were on show, which meant a lot of tubes and excursions but it was worth it. The acropolis offers some incredible views of the city, which, even if you ain’t interested in the history should for sure be a priority. You can get an all-access ticket for most of the main attractions for 30 euros which we would recomme...

Glasgow - The Student City

Image
A pint of T please   Time for a bit of a switch up in locations we are headed to a city on home soil, a place I’ve lived for the past 3 years as a student and I think deserves a mention. Glasgow. I’ll start of with a story about my first day as a student in the city where I headed off to a local bar to grab a pint and explore the city. The local beer in Scotland is Tennents and the logo on the pump is a massive red T. Seeing this I think my subconscious thought I know a way I can really lean into the English southerner stereo type. “Alright pal what can I get for ya.” “Alright mate I’ll have a pint of T please.” “Do you want sugar with that.” I had no idea what he was talking about, I just saw a look of disgust and slowly clocked what I’d asked him for. 3 years on and I’ve gotten used to the lingo but my Scottish accent still needs a bit of work. The city is full of culture with galleries, music venues, bars and restaurants on every corner. Theres a...

Croatia - How to party on Hvar!

Image
5 Englishmen walk into Hvar…   Croatia was the latest excursion that we ventured on. We spent 12 days exploring the coastline country a place where a lot of Game of Thrones was filmed apparently (there was a lot of themed food and drink). We did 6 days in Split including an eventful stopover partying on Hvar and 6 days in Dubrovnik. Croatia has a lot of influence from Italy, so it was back on the winning pizza, Aperol combination. No complaints. Spent a lot of time exploring the old town in Split and I tried to haggle a Croatia flag towel. Unfortunately, she was better at haggling than me, so I walked away with a very nice, full price towel. No complaints. Me on said towel. Spent a night partying on Hvar, I think? Apparently we had a great time. No complaints. Few more games of cards, the hair of a Croatian dog and we were on the road to Dubrovnik. London prices. You won’t save your money. Few complaints. AirBnB had tortoises! Stunning town ...

Budapest on a budget! Cheap food and booze.

Image
Hi Hungary I’m Ben Budapest! That’s the first stop on this tour of Europe. A place named after the river but sounds more like a pesky monk. We started off by bagging a coupla cheap flights from sky scanner. 60 quid return, bargain!  Keeping under the budget. Day 1 Ended up getting in to our Air b&b about 11pm, guess that’s why the flights were cheap, and headed out to scout out some of the local corner shop delicacies. I wanted to get something filling and nutritious after a long hard day sitting on plane but Hannah was feeling the overpriced watermelon… So obviously we spent all our cash on a melon and went to bed Hungary (ha). Still keeping under the budget. ;) Day 2 We woke up, got an on the go porridge and headed off to the Central Market Hall where we found a big ol salami and a lot of goulash. We walked up Gellerts Hill for some pretty views, here’s Hannah flexing her biceps for reference: And spent the rest of the day cycling to the botanical gar...

Bonjour Amigos

Hello, I bet you're all wondering who this mysterious traveller is... A man who’s created his own blog to flex the holidays he’s been on.  You would be spot on!  My ego has decided that it is about time I told the world about my experiences traveling Europe and believes that people will read and learn about how to do it right but most importantly for cheap! Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be taking you on a cultural experience that will make you say 'blimey that looks cracking.' and 'an Aperol spritz for 3 euros, please do tell us more.'  Hopefully you will learn somethings about how to travel on a budget whilst still making the most of your time away and you never know you might even learn some things about yourself too.  Anyway, now you've read this far you might as well give the first post a read. We're off to Budapest where you can see the effects of telling your girlfriend too many jokes about being Hungary! See you there.
